Not Just for Grandma

Sometimes, as the guys in multi-colored lycra and aerodynamic helmets flash past the Cool House early on Sunday mornings in Summer, I think how nice it would be to cycle along the shady roads. Of course I wouldn't be on a sleek racer. I'd be on a sit-up-and-beg omafiets from Dutch Bike Co. Seattle. Oma fiets is Dutch for Grandmother's bike and it's the traditional method of transport in The Netherlands for the ladies. (The guy's bike is an opafiets). This model is from Azor and when I lived in Europe these bikes didn't have brakes; you pedaled backwards to slow down and gears weren't necessary in a land that's mostly flat, but you'll be pleased to hear that cable brakes and multi-speed gears are standard on all the versions sold by Dutch Bike Seattle.

Now the standard oma fiets is fine but as we know modernemama likes a little bling in her life so my cycle of choice would be the Velorbis Scrap Deluxe. Designed by Danes and made in Germany with English saddles crafted from the finest leather, this bike is a true European product and that's reflected in the $1789 price-tag. Luxury maybe, but it's also comfortable, sturdy, classic, modern and sexy all at the same time. How often does that happen?
